Designing memorable premium spaces: Inside the mind of a luxury interior designer

Creating a luxury interior requires a deep understanding of how people experience a space, combined with a flawless attention to detail. Every project demands bespoke solutions that deliver a memorable customer experience while balancing aesthetics, functionality and quality.

Our team brings extensive knowledge and expertise to every prime and luxury project. With experience spanning high-end hospitality and luxury retail fit out environments, a premium mindset influences everything from design and material selection to manufacturing and fit out.

Head of Creative Design, Ciara Neve, has played a key role in shaping some of our most iconic recent luxury projects. Drawing on her experience in hospitality-led design, she shares her approach to creating premium spaces that leave a lasting impression.

What defines a truly successful prime and luxury interior today?

For me, the most successful luxury interiors create an immediate emotional connection. People should remember how a space made them feel long after they’ve left it. A successful interior also needs consistency between the brand, the environment and the overall experience. Every element should feel intentional and connected. The level of detail is incredibly important, but so is usability. A space can be visually stunning, but if it doesn’t work well for the people using it, it fails its primary purpose. This is particularly important in flagship retail fit out projects, where the space often becomes the physical embodiment of a brand.

How does your design process differ for prime and luxury projects?

Prime and luxury projects require a much deeper level of research and strategic thinking at the outset. While understanding the brand and its objectives is fundamental to every project, these schemes demand a more comprehensive exploration of the brand’s identity, context and the elements that will make the space truly distinctive. The design process is also far more iterative, with additional stages of refinement, particularly around detailing, materials and the overall customer experience. We begin considering finishes and technical feasibility much earlier because those decisions often have a significant impact on the final result. This more considered, collaborative approach allows us to create distinctive environments that are both technically robust and true to the brand’s identity.

When designing a prime and luxury interior, how do you approach material selection?

Material selection plays a huge role in defining the character of a space. I prioritise authentic, high-quality materials such as natural stone, timber and metals because they bring a level of richness and longevity that is difficult to replicate. It’s also important to consider how materials will age over time. The best interiors stand the test of time for years to come. With that in mind, material selection is always a delicate balance. We need to consider design intent alongside factors such as availability, programme and budget to ensure the project can be delivered successfully.

How do you ensure quality and precision throughout a luxury fit out?

Quality comes from collaboration and attention to detail at every stage. We work closely with our in-house joinery team and specialist trades to ensure the original design intent is carried through flawlessly into the finished build. Strong technical detailing and comprehensive drawing packages are essential because they provide clarity for everyone involved. Regular site reviews and quality control checks also play a vital role. The more closely you monitor a project throughout delivery, the easier it is to maintain the high standards clients expect from a luxury environment.

How do you factor in the user experience when designing a high-end environment?

My hospitality background has taught me that memorable spaces are built around people. First impressions matter, but so do all the smaller moments throughout a customer’s journey. I think carefully about how people move through a space, how they interact with it and how it supports the experience we’re trying to create. Comfort, flow and ease of use are just as important as aesthetics. The most successful luxury interiors feel effortless because every decision has been carefully curated from the user’s perspective.

What are the biggest challenges in prime and luxury fit outs?

Prime and luxury fit outs are defined by their level of detail. Every decision, from specialist materials and bespoke finishes to technical co-ordination, plays a role in achieving the end result. Delivering the highest quality while working to ambitious programmes requires careful planning, particularly when sourcing specialist materials and incorporating intricate design details.

With premium projects, expectations are naturally high, making clear communication and close collaboration essential throughout every stage of the process. When everyone is on the same page from day one, it’s much easier to overcome challenges and maintain the quality standards expected of a luxury fit out.

You’ve recently worked on Craven House and Corinthia. What did these projects teach you?

Both Craven House and Corinthia reinforced the importance of clear communication and managing expectations from the outset. High-end projects naturally evolve as they progress, so it’s important to stay flexible while keeping everyone aligned and protecting the original design vision.

What I enjoy most about projects like these is working through those challenges to create spaces that feel considered, seamless and true to the client’s vision. It’s that attention to every detail behind the scenes that makes the finished space feel effortless, and seeing it all come together is incredibly rewarding.
