Learn all about Jazz’s past, present and future with DBSJ in our interview below:
How did you get your start in the industry?
I began my career on a bench joiner apprenticeship in 2008, before working on the tools out on site. My career has grown, from the workshop floor to where I am now, Construction Manager at DBSJ. I’m pleased to say I’ve picked up plenty of qualifications along the way, including NVQs and diplomas in joinery. I’m certified in PASMA, Asbestos Awareness, fire safety and first aid. DBSJ has given me the opportunity to develop professionally, cementing my passion for the trade.
What are the key projects you’ve worked on in your career?
I’m very proud of the projects I’ve been a part of at DBSJ. Most recently we finished the Engine Room at Battersea Power Station, it was a privilege to have worked in such a prestigious London building. Watching the outstanding transformation come to life was a real highlight for me. We handed over ahead of schedule, which was down to the continuous hard work and communication with all teams involved.
As well as IWG’s flagship at Battersea Power station I have been a part of numerous other IWG office fit-outs, strengthening our partnership with every project. Our focus to get their doors open on time, on budget and with complete brand accuracy has positioned us as a key partner for their expansion into small towns across the UK hybrid hubs and environmentally efficient shared, flexible spaces.
You mentioned Battersea Power Station, what was it like working within a listed building?
We had to work very closely with all the site managers for all subcontractors – which is no easy feat but we pulled it off! By arranging daily meetings and briefings with the teams, we were able to open the channels of communication, which ensured full transparency throughout the project.
We had to work closely with the heritage team at Battersea to ensure we followed the approved contracted drawings. We collected the relevant information and provided valuable construction knowledge to assist IWG through the legal process, collaborating on its business case and exploring value engineering options to ensure the viability of the scheme.
At DBSJ, we’re very efficient in our planning from the word go, so we were constantly working with Battersea to ensure there were no clashes with deliveries or anything that could interrupt their public opening hours. To keep everyone safe, we managed health and safety with daily audits, site walkarounds and held regular inspections.
Sustainability is a major aim for DBSJ, so we made sure all waste was correctly sorted and nothing was thrown away carelessly. We are continuously improving our environmental processes, minimising our carbon footprint as much as possible and aiming for zero landfill waste.
Our exceptional work on this flagship project got us the recognition of Construction News – shortlisting us as finalists for Project of the Year by a Specialist Contractor in 2024.
What is the most important aspect for you and your team when delivering a project?
The customer must always be happy, which is why it’s important to have a clear and concise site plan in place to ensure co-ordination from all trades. This means everybody is aware of the job they need to deliver to the best of their ability.
Organisation is key, alongside good working relationships with the teams on site and ensuring effective communication is taking place, from the supply chain to different trades and, of course, our partners themselves. We are an added-value partner that builds long-term relationships with customers.
Another aspect that can’t be looked over is adhering to all health and safety standards, with correct procedures and risk assessments being followed. I’m responsible for everybody on site so it’s always my mission to get all trades compliant with health and safety rules. The safety of everyone involved is our top priority.
What are you most proud of in your role and what does your future look like at DBSJ?
I’m so proud to say that I’ve finished projects with zero defects, which in turn helps with relationships with not just customers but also subcontractors and senior leadership.
Working at DBSJ is a privilege, watching challenging projects come to life keeps me driving forward and I’m excited to continue growing and learning at DBSJ. The future is bright, and I look forward to more top-level projects in the pipeline.
